Tempe Residence
A contemporary home designed to maximise space, light and presence on a long, narrow inner-suburban block.
Overview
Located in Tempe, this north-east front facing knockdown rebuild transforms a constrained site into a refined, highly functional family home.
Set on a long, narrow block (approx. 9.4m wide), the design carefully balances spatial efficiency with architectural impact, delivering a home that feels open, light-filled and visually cohesive throughout.
CHALLENGE
Working within a long and narrow site presented a number of design considerations. With a limited frontage and extended block length, the home needed to maximise natural light, airflow and functionality, without feeling confined or overly linear. As a knockdown rebuild in a dense, established suburb, the design also needed to create a strong street presence while maintaining privacy and comfort.
APPROACH
The design response centres around proportion, light and cohesion. A strong recessed frame defines the facade, creating depth and visual impact, while reclaimed brickwork introduces warmth and texture against the clean, rendered form.
Internally, the home is carefully zoned to enhance flow and liveability. The north-east orientation allows natural light to filter through the spaces, while design features such as a glass balustrade staircase help to distribute light deeper into the home.
A consistent material and colour palette was carried throughout, with black-framed elements used intentionally across windows, mirrors, hardware and detailing to create a unified and grounded aesthetic. The kitchen anchors the open-plan living space, featuring black cabinetry contrasted with brass hardware, adding a subtle layer of warmth and refinement.
OUTCOME
The result is a home that feels both spacious and highly considered, despite the constraints of the site. Through careful planning, strong architectural form and a cohesive material palette, the design delivers a balance of function, comfort and visual impact, creating a home that feels far larger than its footprint suggests.
