Austral Residence

A contemporary family home with a modern Hamptons-inspired aesthetic, designed for practical living and timeless appeal.

Overview

Located in Austral, this 2 storey residence combines functional planning with a soft, character-driven material palette. Drawing on modern Hamptons influences, the home balances traditional architectural elements with clean, contemporary finishes, resulting in a design that feels both refined and highly liveable.

CHALLENGE

The brief centred around creating a home that could support a growing family, while maintaining a sense of cohesion, warmth and timeless appeal.

The design needed to incorporate multiple living zones and functional spaces without feeling disconnected, while also achieving a facade that felt inviting and visually balanced within a suburban streetscape.

APPROACH
The layout was considered to deliver both flexibility and flow throughout the home.

On the ground floor, open-plan kitchen, living and dining spaces extend seamlessly to the alfresco, supporting both everyday living and effortless entertaining. A home theatre, guest bedroom and study nook add further adaptability, allowing the home to respond to evolving family needs over time.

Upstairs, four bedrooms are supported by a central sitting area, creating a secondary retreat that enhances the home’s overall functionality and sense of separation between living zones.

At the heart of the home, the kitchen acts as a central gathering point, featuring a large island, gas cooktop and a window splashback that draws in natural light. The adjoining butler’s pantry introduces timber-look joinery, providing a warm contrast against the main kitchen finishes and reinforcing the layered material palette.

Externally, the home references a modern Hamptons-inspired aesthetic. A combination of brick veneer to the ground floor and weatherboard cladding above creates material contrast, while gable roof forms and a covered entry soften the façade and add architectural character.

Further detailing, including colonial-style windows with decorative glazing bars, a panelled garage door and traditional wall sconces, reinforces the Hamptons influence and establishes a welcoming street presence. Feature reclaimed brickwork to the front pillars introduces subtle texture and depth.

Internally, a considered material palette establishes warmth and continuity throughout. Herringbone flooring runs across the ground floor and continues up the staircase, while shaker-style cabinetry, Barrington Eclipse brass ribbed handles and feature tiling introduce a more classic, character-driven layer.

The laundry shifts in tone, combining shaker-style cabinetry with a retro-inspired tiled floor. Paired with brass hardware, the space introduces a softer, country-leaning aesthetic while remaining cohesive with the broader home palette.

Chamfered profiles are carried through the skirting boards and window reveals, reinforcing a subtle but consistent level of detail that threads throughout the home.

OUTCOME

The result is a well-balanced family home that combines practical living with thoughtful design.

By integrating traditional architectural elements with modern finishes and a cohesive material palette, the home achieves a timeless aesthetic while supporting the needs of everyday life.
